Ivo Plšek is a Japanologist, social scientist and university teacher. In the past, he taught at the Masaryk University Japanese Studies Seminar, and currently works at Uppsala University in Sweden.
He has been dealing with modern Japan and East Asia for a long time. He spent over eight years of his life in this region and wrote many newspaper articles and scientific papers about it.
Dr. Plšek will present contemporary Japan in 250 photos and ten videos that he took during his last stay on the Japanese islands in 2021-2022 as a visiting professor at Nazan University. It will show how the Japanese dealt with the covid crisis, how they approach modern architecture and tourism, how they try to cope with the rapid population decline or the ever-growing gap between the Japanese countryside and its cities. The lecture will be a realistic look at not only the positive, but also the dark sides of contemporary life in Japan.
